Education Law: An Overview of Basic Rights of Teachers In Secondary Schools In Nigeria.

Secondary education typically takes place after six years of primary education and is followed by higher education, vocational education or employment. The critical manpower needed to implement the curriculum of the level of education is the secondary school teachers. Secondary school teachers and likened to a candle who consumes itself to light the way for learners. There is no doubt that most school teachers in Nigeria will always say; “What is my business about the law, am I a Lawyer?” The idea of an average school teacher in Nigeria is that it is only the Lawyers who should know the law. Thus, this paper presented an overview of basic rights of teachers in secondary schools in Nigeria with considerations to relevant education law under the subheadings concept of law and education law; sources of education law; legal requirements to be a teacher in Nigeria; Nigerian education laws and curriculum development; concept of teachers’ rights; rights and privileges of registered teacher; professional conduct of registered teacher. It was concluded that the future survival of teachers, principals and other school officials will very much depends upon a knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of law and the application and adherence to these principles in the school environment. It was suggested in this paper, that it is imperative for teachers in the pursuit of their professional calling are to familiarize themselves with and abide by the provisions of relevant laws that relate to the performance of their duties.
