PARENTAL STYLES AS DETERMINANT OF AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOURS OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OSUN STATE, NIGERIA

The study examined the level of aggressive behaviour among adolescents in Secondary Schools in Osun State. It also assessed the influence of parenting styles on aggressive behaviour of adolescents in the study area. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of this study comprised adolescent students in public secondary schools in Osun State. The sample size of 1000 students was selected using multistage sampling procedure. Two instruments titled Questionnaire on Aggressive Behaviour (QAB) and Parenting Styles Questionnaire (PSQ) were administered on students. The instruments were validated before used. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, simple percentages and regression analysis. The results showed that 19. 6% had low level of aggressive behaviour, 5 6. 6% of them had moderate level of aggressive behaviour and 23. 8% had high level of aggressive behaviour. The results also showed that parenting styles yielded a coefficient of multiple regression (R) of 0.409, a multiple correlation square (R2) of 0.167, adjusted R of 0.164 with F-ratio of 47.206 which is statistically significant at 0. 05 level. The study concluded that moderate and high levels of aggression were being exhibited among adolescents in secondary schools.
