Abstract

Teachers are facilitators of learning and key role players in the effective implementation of the Nigeria National Policy on Education. Quality assurance in education is impossible where teachers are not satisfied with their jobs. This paper, therefore, examined the level of job satisfaction among preschool teachers working in both private and public schools in Odeda Local Government Area (LGA) of Ogun State. The descriptive survey design was employed. Three public and seven private nursery and primary schools were randomly selected from the LGA. All preschool teachers in the selected schools, giving a total sample of one hundred and fifty (150) respondents, were involved in the study. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire tagged "Teachers' Job Satisfaction Questionnaire" (TJSQ), which was duly validated giving a Cronbach Alpha coefficient of 0. 805. The finding of the study revealed that preschool teachers were generally satisfied with their jobs except for their monthly salaries and their future pension and gratuity. No significant difference was found in the teachers' level of job satisfaction based on age, marital status, school type, teaching experience and educational qualification. It is recommended that there should be an upward review of preschool teachers' salary and other remunerations to increase their job satisfaction for better job effectiveness in order to achieve better quality of education.
