RELEVANCE OF BILINGUAL EDUCATION IN FOSTERING NATIONAL UNITY AND DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

This paper explored the importance of bilingual education in Nigeria, specifically focusing on its impact on national unity and development. The paper adopted the theoretical research design by examining existing literature, policies, and initiatives. The paper shed light on the potential benefits and challenges of bilingual education and provides insights into effective strategies for its implementation. The paper highlighted the significance of language as a tool for communication, identity formation, and cultural expression. It emphasizes that embracing bilingual education allows individuals to develop proficiency in multiple languages which helps to bridge language barriers, facilitate communication, and promote empathy, ultimately strengthening the sense of national unity. Furthermore, the paper explored the relationship between bilingual education and national development. It discussed how bilingualism can enhance economic growth, promote international competitiveness, and facilitate cross-cultural collaboration. Moreover, it contributed to the preservation and revitalization of indigenous languages, safeguarding Nigeria's rich linguistic heritage. The paper also acknowledged the challenges associated with implementing bilingual education in Nigeria, while proffering solutions to the identified challenges. These challenges include inadequate resources, lack of teacher training, and resistance to change. To address these obstacles, the paper recommended strategies such as policy reforms, investment in teacher training programmes, and the integration of technology in language learning. This study offered valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in designing effective bilingual education programmes that empower individuals, strengthen national identity, and drive sustainable development.
